Chinooks FC 2013 Girls secure gold!

The Chinooks FC 2013 girls team travelled to Edmonton on their first out of town tournament on
June 22 and 23. They returned to Calgary as gold medallists after three straight, hard-
fought wins.

Having never played 9 v 9 before and only travelling with one substitute, the team was
walking into a tournament where they would need to work hard and work together to get
strong results. That’s exactly what they did.

In the first game, Chinooks took an early lead against their opponents.  The team looked strong and poised on the ball throughout the game and their play from set pieces led to a goal and several great chances.

Game two came in the afternoon heat with temperatures hitting 27 degrees. Despite
some red faces, the girls never looked tired and they never looked back. A determined
opposing team held Chinooks scoreless for a while in the first half, but through determination and some amazing defense, the team secured a clean sheet.

Sunday morning meant an early 8 am start for the gold medal game against a formidable opponent. The opposition struck first with an early goal. Chinooks responded quickly to tie up the
game on a beautiful set piece short corner kick that deflected into the back of the net.
The game was very even for the remainder of the first half and much of the second.
After a few chances saved or shots going just barely wide, Chinooks struck gold with a stunning free-kick goal to secure their lead.

“The girls performed brilliantly and have once again blown me away with their play,
composure and teamwork,” says Rhys Evans, Head Coach and the Club’s Technical Director. “They went one nil down and fought back courageously to take the win and to take gold.”

The girls left Edmonton in high spirits with memorable team bonding and confidence
building experience. The very tight-knit squad celebrated their victory by dumping their
water bottles on their poor coaches who were happy to celebrate the win with the team.

Next up for the Chinooks 2013 Girls is the Calgary Cup tournament where the team looks forward to yet another challenge where they can develop their skills.
